[DAILY TRADING]: GBP/USD Analysis 18 August 2026 — Pound Holds Near 1.3541 as UK Resilience Offsets a Wobbly Dollar
GBP/USD, GBP USD, GBP to USD, GBP vs USD, GBP v USD, USD to GBP, USD GBP: however it lands in the search bar, the pair traded near 1.3541 on the Vantage GBPUSD CFD as of 03:00 GMT on 18 August 2026, a touch off the three-month high above 1.3550 it printed earlier in the week.1 A quiet pause after a strong week.
What’s Moving GBP/USD
GBP climbed to its strongest level in three months this week. MUFG called it the best-performing major currency of the month, crediting UK resilience to the Middle East energy shock, attractive yields and fading Fed hike bets.1
The Dollar Index (DXY) slipped 0.40% to near 99.54, an FXStreet read on the GBP/USD forecast picture notes, after July retail sales fell 0.6% versus a forecast 0.1% gain.2 US CPI eased to 3.4% year-on-year in July, core to 2.5%, both in line with forecasts; CIBC read that as room for the Fed to hold in September.1 PPI reinforced it, flat month-on-month and below the 0.2% expected, core cooling to 4.2% from 4.7%.3 Sentiment slipping to 51.0 from 55.2 backed it up.2
Scotiabank flagged a still-hawkish BoE, Chief Economist Huw Pill among three MPC members reaffirming the case for higher rates.1,5 The MPC held Bank Rate at 3.75% on 30 July by a 6-3 vote.5
Reading the Chart
Price sat at 1.35411 on the 15-minute chart, just below its 50-period moving average near 1.35471 and above the 200-period line near 1.35403, per the TradingView setup used here. The rally toward the week’s high near 1.35700 stalled during London’s morning on 17 August; the retracement since has pulled the pair back toward 1.3535-1.3545.
RSI(14) reads 41.62, its moving average at 49.19, both under the neutral 50 line after easing off a peak near 70 on Monday. Momentum has cooled, not collapsed. Vantage’s RSI explainer covers how it works.

GBP to USD Forecast: What to Watch Next

The ONS publishes UK CPI for July at 07:00 on Wednesday, 19 August.6 Inflation eased to 2.6% in the year to June, its lowest since March 2025.6 A hot print backs the MPC hawks; a soft one backs the majority, and Fed minutes, also due Wednesday, add a second swing factor to the GBP USD forecast.
SocGen sees room for GBP/USD toward 1.38 if the rebound holds, flagging May’s 1.3660 high as a hurdle; MUFG’s 12-month view sits lower at 1.36.1 For the latest GBP/USD news, see Currency Trading News and Federal Reserve News. Risk Considerations
Data releases and central bank speak, including Wednesday’s UK CPI and FOMC minutes, can move GBP/USD fast either way. A Stop Loss order lets traders pre-define where a position closes.
Leverage lets a trader control a larger position than their balance alone allows; Vantage offers up to 1:1000 on eligible accounts. It cuts both ways, so position sizing deserves real thought.
