[DAILY TRADING] Home Depot (HD) Analysis 17 August 2026 – Stock Slips From $358 Peak Ahead of Q2 Earnings

Vantage Updated Updated Mon, 2026 August 17 07:40

Home Depot (HD) stock traded at $338.82 on 17 August 2026, down from a $358 peak on 11 August and below its 50-period and 200-period moving averages, as CEO Ted Decker takes medical leave just ahead of Home Depot’s second-quarter earnings report on 18 August.

Home Depot has had quite the month. A springboard rally to $358, a sharp slide back into the $330s, and now a CEO stepping away right as investors brace for Tuesday’s earnings. If there was ever a week to actually read the chart instead of skimming the headline, this is it.

The Vantage HD CFD, tracking Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE: HD), traded at $338.82 as of 17 August 2026, 10:34 (GMT+8) / 02:34 UTC, based on the 15-minute chart used for this analysis. The latest 15-minute bar opened at $338.58, ranged between $337.65 and $338.86, and the chart displayed a +$0.20 (+0.06%) change.

This piece reads the HD stock price and the news flow around it heading into Home Depot’s second-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings, due before the market opens on 18 August. All prices referenced are past or present only. This is not financial advice.

Key points

  • HD stock price sits at $338.82, below both the 50-period moving average (348.09) and the 200-period moving average (340.23) on the 15-minute timeframe used for this analysis.
  • The RSI (14) reads 45.85 against its moving-average overlay of 45.84, keeping momentum in a neutral zone just under the 50 midline, not overbought or oversold.

HD stock price today: what the chart is showing

The 15-minute chart used for this analysis covers 30 July to 17 August 2026, and the stock price of HD tells a story of momentum gained, then quickly given back. HD climbed from around $332 in late July to an intraday high near $358 around 11 August, a rally with real teeth, then rolled over just as fast, giving back most of that advance to settle in the $338 to $340 zone by the 17 August session.

As of the cut-off time, the price sits below both moving averages plotted on the chart. The 50-period moving average reads 348.09 and the 200-period moving average reads 340.23, both still perched above the last traded price. Because this is a 15-minute chart, these are 50-period and 200-period readings, not 50-day or 200-day averages, and reading them as daily figures would be a mistake worth avoiding.

The 50-period average remains above the 200-period average, so the chart has not shown a confirmed cross-under between the two lines. What has changed is the gap between them: it has narrowed noticeably since the early-August peak, a sign of how quickly the recent pullback dragged the shorter average down with it.

Momentum, measured by the RSI (14) on the TradingView setup used for this analysis, reads 45.85, with its moving-average overlay at 45.84. The two lines are practically stacked on top of each other just under the 50 midline. That is a market that has lost the upward momentum it built earlier in August, without yet showing an oversold extreme worth flagging. Volume on the shown bar, per the Vantage CFD feed, was 41.9K.

Why home depot stock is in focus this week

Why home depot stock is in focus this week

Two developments are shaping how the market is positioning around Home Depot stock heading into the print, and neither one is small. First, Home Depot announced on 12 August that chair, president and chief executive Ted Decker would take a temporary medical leave of absence, expected to last a few months.1

The company said the arrangement was made in alignment with Decker’s own recommendation. Senior executive vice president Ann-Marie Campbell will oversee day-to-day operations, chief financial officer Richard McPhail will oversee financial management and the Pro subsidiaries, and lead independent director Greg Brenneman will chair the board during the leave.2

Home Depot shares fell more than 2% in the session that followed the announcement, a reminder that leadership news can move a stock just as fast as an earnings beat or miss.3

Second, Home Depot reports second-quarter fiscal 2026 results before the market opens on 18 August. Consensus estimates compiled by Zacks point to revenue near $47.5 billion, up close to 4.9% from the year-ago quarter, and adjusted earnings per share near $4.71, compared with adjusted EPS of $4.68 a year earlier.4

Management’s full-year comparable-sales guidance remains approximately flat to 2% growth, against a backdrop of consumer uncertainty and continued housing-affordability pressure.5

Ahead of the report, sell-side coverage has been anything but united on direction. Wells Fargo raised its price target for HD to $400 while maintaining an Overweight rating on 11 August, and RBC Capital raised its price target to $343 while maintaining a Sector Perform rating on 12 August.3

That $57 gap between two fresh price targets, issued a day apart, says a lot about how differently analysts are weighing Home Depot’s earnings resurgence against its still-soft comparable-sales trend heading into Tuesday.

Levels to watch and risk framing

The table below covers the reference levels visible on the chart used for this analysis. These are reference points, not trade signals, and the current HD stock forecast picture from sell-side analysts sits well above every level shown here.

50-period MA348.09Higher overhead reference, still reflecting the early-August peak

Latest bar low337.65Low of the latest 15-minute bar

What to watch

  • Q2 FY2026 Earnings, 18 August: Home Depot reports before the market opens, with consensus pointing to adjusted EPS near $4.71 and revenue near $47.5 billion.
  • Comparable-Sales Trend, 18 August: Watch whether U.S. comparable sales improve from the 0.4% increase reported in Q1, with management maintaining full-year comparable-sales guidance of approximately flat to 2% growth.
  • CEO Leave Update, Ongoing: Any further disclosure on Ted Decker’s return timeline from the temporary medical leave that began 12 August.

Home Depot stock value has moved from the $330s to the high $350s and back to the high $330s within a few weeks, so intraday ranges around this earnings report may run wider than usual. Market participants holding a position in HD CFDs, or in related consumer discretionary and retail exposure, often monitor stop-loss placement relative to the levels above rather than a fixed distance from the current price. Reviewing combined exposure across correlated retail and homebuilder-linked positions is also worth doing before the release, since a surprise in either direction on 18 August could affect sentiment across related retail and home-improvement names.

Leverage works both ways heading into a scheduled earnings release, amplifying gains and losses alike, and it deserves a fresh look ahead of the 18 August report. Position sizing relative to account equity is worth revisiting given the stock’s recent volatility, particularly for anyone holding HD CFDs into the print rather than around it.
