[DAILY TRADING]: XAUUSD Analysis 17 August 2026: Gold Holds $4,394 as Fed Minutes Loom
Gold’s had a strong couple of weeks, and today it’s mostly just catching its breath. The XAUUSD price traded at $4,394.36 as of 12:25 (GMT+8) on 17 August 2026, per the XAUUSD TradingView setup used for this analysis, up a modest $1.14 (0.03%) on the session after opening at $4,393.23 in a tight $4,392.90 to $4,394.99 range.
That calm is the story. Gold prices pushed to a fresh multi-week high earlier today before easing back, and the pullback looks more like a pause than a reversal. Here’s what today’s gold price today setup, the RSI, and the calendar are actually saying. We read the chart, we don’t call the trade.
What The XAUUSD Chart Is Showing Today

Zoom out and this is a two-leg recovery, not one straight line. Gold fell from around $4,390 to a low near $4,308 to $4,310 on 13-14 August, then rallied to a first peak near $4,400 to $4,403. That move faded into a pullback toward $4,371 to $4,375, roughly where the 50-period average sits, before a second, sharper rally carried price to a fresh high near $4,420 to $4,422 in the early hours of 17 August. Price has since eased back into the tighter $4,390 to $4,400 band shown at the cut-off above.
The XAUUSD price is holding above both moving averages on this chart: the 50-period average at $4,371.32 and the 200-period average at $4,384.55. That keeps the near-term structure constructive, with the 200-period line now standing as the first real support beneath current levels.
The RSI(14) sits at 56.16, with its moving average at 59.90, both back in the middle of the range. That’s well off the overbought zone near 70 to 77 that came with last week’s rally, and clear of the oversold dip near 30 during the 13-14 August pullback. In plain terms: a market catching its breath, not one running out of road.
The Gold News Driving The Move

Gold’s push to a fresh high tracked a pullback in Fed rate-hike expectations, with markets scaling back bets for a September move after a week of softer US inflation data. 1
The Middle East crisis remains unresolved, and that unresolved risk premium is still underpinning demand for gold as a hedge. 1
Central bank buying adds a steadier layer of support underneath all of this: China’s central bank added roughly 20 tonnes to its gold reserves in July, extending its buying streak to a 21st consecutive month. 2
What’s On The Calendar This Week
Minutes from the Fed’s 28-29 July meeting, which held rates steady, are scheduled for release this Wednesday, 19 August, three weeks after the decision under the Fed’s standard publication schedule. 3 The Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium runs 27 to 29 August, 4 with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh expected to deliver his first keynote as chair, an event traders are already positioning around. 5

Closing: Risk And Position Sizing
On risk management, the moving-average cluster between $4,371.32 and $4,384.55 is the zone many traders are watching for a reaction, with the $4,308 to $4,310 area as the deeper reference point if that cluster gives way. Stop Loss placement around these levels limits losses to a planned size rather than leaving exposure open-ended, worth revisiting given how fast this pair has moved on Fed repricing and Middle East headlines this past week.
Leverage on a Vantage XAUUSD CFD works both ways, scaling gains and losses in equal measure, and it’s always worth framing as a double-edged tool rather than a shortcut. Position sizing relative to account equity matters more than the entry itself, especially heading into Wednesday’s Fed minutes and the run-up to Jackson Hole later this month.
For the wider picture, Vantage’s gold news and gold price news tags track the day-to-day moves, Federal Reserve news and interest rate news cover the policy side, and safe haven assets and technical analysis dig into why gold behaves the way it does. Risk management applies to all of it, and the full XAUUSD news and commodity market news tags cover the wider picture. The live XAUUSD chart and rate are on the Vantage platform, and market news today has everything else moving markets right now.
