Hedging is opening a position designed to offset potential losses in another position, and it can be done with CFDs by taking an opposite position in the same or a related market, such as shorting an index CFD against a share portfolio. Hedging can reduce exposure but adds costs, including spreads and financing, and an imperfect hedge can still lose money.
